Rain, Soup, Cake; that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Like the soup is sticking to my ribs 🙂

when you were growing up did you have a Rainy Day Cupboard?
there was one at the grandparents.
so rainy days and the smell of soup and doing a complicated Puzzle…….
ah yes.
childhood memories.
the soups were always with a floury potato base as we recall.
No rainy day cupboard. But there was a trunk full of toys and puzzles and games that came out on rainy days. Our rainy days were in the tropics (Fiji), so soup didn’t feature 😦
a TRUNK!
gosh.
reveries of Transatlantic Crossings….
Yes! Yes! And indeed there were two trunks. They came from the UK to NZ (in centuries past), then NZ to Fiji, thence to Australia. I myself have two trunks that have travelled the entire world. They now lie all forlorn and unmoving in my garage. In my living room I have my mother’s glory box 🙂
wow.
have you written about them?
Links Please.
I have written about the glory box but the story rests inside the glory box. Maybe I will type it up one day, since you are interested 🙂
yes please.
there’s a good story there.
we can feel it all the way from Over Here.
Right! I’ll get on to it!
It looks like the perfect rainy day at home to me!
Thank you. How are you getting on with all that smoke haze in Singapore? Looks horrible.
I’ve just posted a blog post on it with some photos. It’s pretty awful, would rather be housebound with rain! Thanks for your concern.
Okay, will check the new posts that are waiting for me to read.
🙂
The soup and cake look delicious. It looks like you found a fun, productive way to spend a rainy day.
I did indeed. I am about to taste test the cake to make sure it is delicious before I post the recipe. 🙂
The soup and cake look delicious and perfect for the cozy and rainy day indoors! Can’t wait to see the recipes!
We have more rain and snow today. Nothing like your snow but enough to keep us indoors again. That should give me time to write up the recipes.
Sounds like the perfect rainy afternoon to me!
Apart from the rain it was! Today we have the snow that was forecast for yesterday.
Ah, I love snow! (although I admit, it’s quite a bother to drive in and to shovel the driveway, etc….). Do you get a lot of snow there?
Snow for us in Christchurch is a rare event. Perhaps once or twice a year. And some years no snow at all. Other higher elevations in New Zealand get heavier and more regular snowfall.
How lovely for you to get some snow today then; enjoy each flake 🙂
Rain is coming to us later today. I like to bake something when it is cold outside. I look forward to your recipes 🙂 Annie
Baking keeps the house warm 🙂
Rain is usually such a beautiful experience, specially seen from indoors that we sometimes forget what catastrophe it can bring. A few days back, heavy downpours in the Himalayan ranges have brought untold misery and isolation to large swathes of folks living in the foothills.
I sometimes wonder if Good and Evil are but two sides of the same coin.

The downpours in the Himalayan ranges were dreadful. It’s incredible that a substance that is so soft and silky and so necessary to life can also be so powerful and destructive. We have had severe flooding in parts of the country this week but the main damage has been to property and land. Thank you for coming by to read my post.
Looking forward to those recipes! Hope your weather turns around soon. It’s stormy and wet here too; I’m just getting ready to head off to work for the day and I’m not excited about going out. I’d rather stay indoors and curl up with a good book…. 🙂
Yes, it is lovely to be able to stay home on wild weather days.
Both look wonderful! I love to cook or bake on rainy/snowy days!
Keeps the house and heart warm, doesn’t it? Is it early morning for you? Every night almost, just as I am starting to get ready for bed, you greet me via a post. It’s really nice.
Yes! I have wondered what time it is for you! 🙂
It is 7am here and I’ve have my steaming cup of coffee next to me, ready to start the day!
I am a night owl so it is already 11.03 pm. Enjoy your day after that lovely cup of coffee.
Sweet dreams!
🙂
I like your coffee mug. The cup for soup is very stylist. These items were put together well for a rainy day 🙂
Thank you. The coffee mug is a favourite one because it is bright and cheerful. The design pattern is called Kimono. The soup cup was a gift from my sister. The shape is fascinating to me and it is actually very comfortable to hold and use.
Soup , cake are perfect for a rainy day! ahhh duvet cover also!hahaha
Something to warm us on the inside and something to keep us warm on the outside 🙂 The cake has a little brandy on it so that is extra warming!
Lovely story
Thank you. Nice and short for a change 😀
Like your life…. specially the soup and cake! yummy! Keep warm and cosy! 🙂
Thank you. I am doing my best to keep warm in heart and body (particularly feet 🙂 )
Oh welcome to the club… my feet are always cold too…… so join the cold feet club! 🙂
Do you think some bright red socks would help?
Mine are blue and fluffy! 🙂 Red looks warm though!
My slippers are blue.
I love how you put your stories together!! I’m looking forward to your next post with the recipes…
Thank you 🙂
Okay. That’s it. I’m coming to your house. I want to eat the cake, and the lentils, and the soup. I want to see the plants you are growing in the tubs. I want to feel the rain.
Plus, is that a Jan Vermeer, in the book in the back?
That’s it. I’m booking the flight now.
Oh…..could you give me your address?
You are a special lady.
Cheers from the holler~
You are such a great traveller I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if you arrived on my doorstep tomorrow! And you would be welcome. The painting in the book is ‘Bridget Holmes’ by John Riley 1646 -1691. He was Principal Painter to William 3rd. Bridget who was supposed to be 96 years old when this portrait was done was a Necessary Woman at Court. It was unusual for an elegant portrait to be done of a servant at that time; or at any time really. Here is one source for my information http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/collection/405667/bridget-holmes-1591-1691 Sometimes I feel like a Necessary Woman but I like to have a bit of glamour around my domesticity too. Will I live to be 100?
Warming tones of burgundy and gold and a fun game of hide and seek with a stick(?!) or perhaps someone lurking behind the Arras or a nice save before the curtain got a beating to remove the dust? It sound miserable in the South Island with more to come apparently. It is about 4C here with a little rain, heavy cloud and little wind……..so far…. but they are warning us about 130km winds…..
Keep safe!!!!
Yes, you can tell I was trying to keep warm and amused with the assistance of props! It is not nice in Christchurch and worse elsewhere. But no snow yet for us. I am staying firmly indoors. I hope the wind is kinder to you than forecast.
We need to do our supermarket shopping after dinner tonight so fingers crossed the storm waits until after that AND after our daughter gets home from seeing The Phantom of the Opera in Wellington. We are beginning to feel a degree of cabin fever after days of rain and gloomy, gloomy light. More indoor days to come however.
Take care!
Hope there is something left in the supermarket. People were emptying the shelves in Christchurch yesterday. It was all slightly mad.
I had heard things were a bit crazy in the supermarkets in the South Island.
